Championships
Formula Renault BARC is the most affordable and cost-effective way of racing a state-of-the-art Formula Renault car; the championship priding itself on being able to bridge the gap between club-level racing and national-level motorsport.
Originally, Formula Renault BARC was a highly successful club series for both young, up and coming career minded racers and seasoned gentleman drivers, competing in multi-chassis Formula Renault cars as raced in the full Formula Renault UK series in the 1990s.
But in 2005, Renault UK chose to put its weight behind the championship and, at the same time, introduce the world’s most successful junior single-seater, the FR 2.0, into Formula Renault BARC.
To all intents and purposes, the FR 2.0 seen in Formula Renault BARC is identical to the cars utilised in Formula Renault UK but there are three key differences – the BARC cars use fixed gear ratios, they feature engine restrictors which reduce lap times slightly in comparison to the full UK series and the cars also have previous generation aerodynamics.
Russell Racing’s own Matt Russell became Vice-Champion of the Formula Renault BARC FR2000 Class in 2005, while the team enjoyed podium success with former British Racing Drivers' Club (BRDC) 'Rising Star' Matt Shawyer in 2006.
Formula Renault UK is the most high-profile national, junior single-seater series in the country and the championship has played a role in the careers of some of the biggest names in global motorsport.
Lewis Hamilton, 2008 FIA Formula One World Champion, won the Formula Renault UK title in 2003 while, three years before him, 2007 F1 Champion Kimi Raikkonen claimed the 2000 Formula Renault UK crown.
Throughout the year, Formula Renault UK forms part of the prestigious British Touring Car Championship race package and benefits from first class live television coverage through the ITV network.
